ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
CBS Atlanta News had Tough Questions for Atlanta City Council members considering giving themselves a 50 percent pay raise.
As of now it's just a proposal, but city workers are already furious. They even gave council members an earful during a committee meeting Wednesday.
Atlanta's Elected Officials Compensation Commission recommended the pay raise.
The proposed 50 percent increase would take council salaries from $39,000 a year to $60,000.
Atlanta Police Union President Ken Allen didn't hold back after learning that council members were considering raising their salaries.
Allen said his officers conceded a tremendous amount of pay so council could balance the city's budget.
"They asked us to be a partner. They asked to work together as a partner to solve the problems of the city to help the financial recovery. This does not keep them at that partnership," said Allen.
The commission also suggested a 20 percent raise for Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.
Atlanta union leaders see even the consideration of the salary bump a betrayal.
"All they know is 50 percent more money and we can't even get 1 percent increase a year. It's maddening," union worker Gina Pagnotta-Murphy said.
