Columbia Co. School Board Chair debates charter school amendment

Posted: Updated:
EVANS, GA (WFXG) -

It's one of the most hotly contested issues on this year's ballot- the Charter School Amendment.

If passed, it would allow the state to establish charter schools without local school board approval.

The issue was in the limelight during  Monday's Charter School debate at the Hardin Performing Arts Center in Evans.

Columbia Co. School Board Chair Regina Buccafusco was on the four-person panel and opposed the amendment, challenging it takes away local control.

On the other side of the argument was Executive Director of Provost Academy Georgia Dr. Monica Henson, who says the amendment would give more options to students and parents stuck in failing school districts.
