PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ron Barber has won the U.S. House seat in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District.

Barber won a special election earlier this year to fill the rest of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' term in Congress. Barber was shot twice alongside Giffords during an assassination attempt on the congresswoman that killed six people and wounded many others outside a Safeway store in Tucson on Jan. 8, 2011.

Since being elected to serve Southern Arizona in Congress, Barber has worked to keep taxes low for middle class families, protect Social Security and Medicare, create jobs, support military families and bases and secure the border.

Republican political newcomer Martha McSally's economic proposals have included cutting federal regulations and lowering taxes.

"Businesses need a stable and low tax rate and a consistent regulatory system, so they can plan for the future and create more jobs," she said. "If we want to truly change Washington, we can't send another bureaucrat or politician to Congress."

She is the first female fighter pilot to fly in combat, and first to command a fighter squadron in combat in U.S. history. In 2001-2002, Martha McSally earned national recognition for successfully overturning a military policy requiring all U.S. servicewomen to wear Muslim clothing when off base in Saudi Arabia.

The Green Party candidate in the race was Anthony Prowell.

District 2, in Arizona's southeastern corner, includes Tucson, Sierra Vista and Douglas, among other communities.
