Enjoying the Georgia-Carolina State Fair on a budget

Posted: Updated:

Times are tough; there aren't too many 5, 10 or 20 dollar bills in wallets for many people.

So Fox54's Mark Barber went to the Georgia-Carolina State Fair Sunday on a budget, to see how much $30 will get for a family of 3.

Tickets at the door for a family of 3 normally cost $18. But on weekends they offer family specials and if you have a child under 12 in your group – you get in at half price.

So our family of three walked into the fair for nine bucks.

"The way I'm trying to save money is they run specials," said Vinnie Boyett.

Boyett was at the fair Sunday with his wife and son and they were also on a budget.

"My budget today is not to go over maybe 40 bucks; and I think we can do it and have a good time," Boyett, said.

As Boyett and his son checked out some of the rides - we checked out the prices of the rides.

A pass for unlimited rides usually costs 19 bucks; instead we paid $12, thanks to the family special.

One thing at the fair you don't need money for is the shows, said fair manager, Joe Taylor, "The shows are all free, there's no charge for the shows."

Halfway through the day we had spent 21 bucks and still have $9 more to go.

We stopped for something to drink and paid $6 for 2 small lemonades from Carnival Candy.

We couldn't leave the fair without a souvenir, so we put down two more dollars to fish for a prize.

"It's pretty reasonable compared to going to a movie so it's always worth it," said Boyett.

For us, it was worth every penny of 29 dollars.

If you're in the military, a teacher or a government employee, the fair has deals for you this week. For more information visit: http://www.georgiacarolinastatefair.org/.
