AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
A standoff with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office has ended with the suspect committing suicide.
The unidentified male suspect was described as being between age 20 and 25, according to witnesses at the scene.
It all unfolded after the Sheriff's Office responded to calls shortly before 5pm of a man with a gun on Young Forest Drive off of Peach Orchard Road.
When deputies found him, a brief chase ensued, at which point the suspect fired his weapon. Deputies don't know if the shot was intended for them.
After negotiations with a SWAT team for close to an hour and a half, the suspect then shot himself in the front yard of a home on Karian Drive.
The neighborhood was closed off for the duration of the encounter.
