Eleven months after Occupy Atlanta members clashed with police in riot gear during a tense showdown in an Atlanta park, they're now drawing support from police officers in their efforts to help a longtime detective avoid losing her home to foreclosure.
Jacqueline Barber fought crime as an Atlanta police officer and has fought bone marrow cancer and right now she is fighting to stay in her home.
"It has just been hard," Barber said as she fought back her tears.
Barber, a retired detective and a grandmother of four, faces eviction.
Barber said lender foreclosed on her property even as company executives told her they would try to negotiate a deal.
Barber bought her house on Stearman Road in 2005 so her four grandchildren would have a place to call home.
"Two, 4, 6 and 10. They have to have a roof over their heads," Barber said.
Barber fell into trouble a few years ago when her disability benefits were cut off.
Barber's lender, Wells Fargo, modified her adjustable mortgage to a fixed rate, but her payments shot up from $2,400 a month to nearly $3,900.
Barber earlier this year received a letter from a collection agency, telling her they wanted to help stay her in her home.
At the same time, however, her lender filed foreclosure proceedings and a short time later she received an eviction notice.
"I'm just numb, very numb," Barber said. "I don't know what's going to happen one day to the next. We have no place else to go."
Activists with Occupy Our Homes Atlanta, along with current and retired officers like Joyce Sanders, joined forces and stood in solidarity with barber to get the company that currently holds her mortgage to hold off the eviction and negotiate.
"Surely they can bring the mortgage payment down so she can afford it," Sanders said.
"If they come to put me out, I'll hope (Occupy Our Homes protesters) will be carried out with me because they're going to have to physically remove me from the property."
"I just want to see the bank do the right thing. I want them to negotiate and talk with me to see if we can work something out," Barber said.
A spokeswoman for wells Fargo told CBS Atlanta News that the mortgage company GMAC now holds Barber's loan.
CBS Atlanta News called GMAC and is waiting for a response.
