Church flips houses to help homeless

SUMTER, SC (WIS) -

"If God can use me, he can use you."

Knowledge Scientific wants you to know his life changed at 323 Ministry in Sumter. After years of drugs and violence, the homeless shelter on Oakland St. was Scientific's saving grace.

"Ten years of homelessness, 15 years of incarceration all based on a feeling, a sense of abandonment," he said.

But then he met the owners of 323 Ministry, Pastor Philip Fidler and his wife, Kimberly.

16 months ago, they turned an abandoned home into place for people like Scientific to get clean and on their feet.

"We want to get to know these folks," said Philip Fidler. "We want to know their struggles and background and be able to help them."

And they're doing it again.  Two blocks down the street a donated home will become their shelter for women and their children.

The three bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath home will host up to five families.  It will have a computer center for guests to job search, take online classes and even use social media.

"We encourage our people to rebuild lost relationships," said Kimberly Fidler. "We do it through Facebook."

It will also have a place for bible study. Today Scientific serves as a ministry leader with the Fidlers. The 44-year-old said 323 Ministry renewed his spirit and focus.

"I can possibly be something better than what I used to be," he said.

"Seeing that kind of transformation in their lives, there's nothing more rewarding for me," said Rev. Fidler.

Calvary Sumter hopes to complete the women's shelter by early next month. For more information, or to donate, click here.
