CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -
One man was shot after bullets started flying during the dinner rush at a crowded Chandler restaurant. As of Saturday night, the gunman was still on the loose.
The shooting happened at Serrano's on Arizona Avenue just before 6 p.m.
Police said the gunman walked up to the table where the victim was sitting with some other people and asked if he knew who he was. Yelling escalated into a fight in the aisle of the restaurant. Witnesses say that's when the shooter pulled a gun from his waistband and fired several shots.
"It doesn't appear right now to be just a random shooting. We have plenty of officers in the downtown area tonight that are actively looking for this suspect," said Chandler Police Detective Seth Tyler.
Downtown was a lot busier than usual. Hundreds of people gathered just a block away from where the shooting happened for an event called the Taste of Chandler.
Witnesses told police the shooter was last seen going the opposite way of the event. The suspect is described as a heavyset black or Hispanic man. He was last seen wearing a red shirt and black shorts and leaving the area in a gold-colored sedan.
Police said the man who was shot is in stable condition at a local hospital.
