COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -
"If you're fortunate enough to keep winning and winning, they all get bigger as you go. Obviously, this is a big one for us," said Gamecock head football coach Steve Spurrier during his Tuesday morning press conference.
It's hard to argue with the Head Ball Coach about this one. It really is the most important game of the year for the No. 6 Gamecocks (5-0, 3-0 SEC) and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0 SEC).
Win, and control your destiny in the SEC East. Lose, and it could end the hunt for a spot in the SEC Championship game in December.
Adding to the hype is a primetime spot on ESPN on Saturday night as one of the marquee games of the day and a visit from the four letter network's College Gameday.
The last time Gameday was in town, South Carolina had a coming out party against the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide and the rest of the college football-viewing public took notice.
Now, the college football world is taking notice once again.
Entering this game, the Gamecocks and the Bulldogs have playmakers on both sides of the ball.
South Carolina has running back Marcus Lattimore, who has always made Georgia a statement game. Lattimore has rushed on Georgia's defense for 358 yards and 3 touchdowns during the last two meetings.
Georgia has the steady production of quarterback Aaron Murray, who has thrown for 1370 yards, 12 touchdowns, and only two interceptions this season.
South Carolina has defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who has recorded 5 ½ sacks so far this year, but has been productive pressuring quarterbacks and running backs.
Georgia has Jarvis Jones, outside linebacker, who has been credited with 4 ½ sacks of his own and one interception.
With playmakers all over the field for both teams, it's easy to see that both sides appear to be evenly matched this season. South Carolina comes in to this game being just a 1 point favorite, according to Vegas odds.
Also bringing another level of intrigue to this match is history. In the past eight games, the winning team has won by an average of just over 6 ½ points with UGA winning five of the past eight, but USC winning the two most recent games in 2010 and 2011.
One thing appears to be certain in a game full of uncertainty: the Gamecocks and the Bulldogs stand at the precipice of history.
