Laney Walker/ Bethlehem project continues to grow

The grass is cut and the paint is fresh on Pine Street, a stark contrast between what this neighborhood once was.

It speaks for itself. We are currently maxed out on Pine Street which has enabled us to move to our next street which is part of Heritage Pine which is 11th street," said the assistant director of housing, Hawthorne Welcher.

The city is investing more than $38 million into redeveloping the Laney Walker/ Bethlehem neighborhoods and three projects are already underway.

"We've already started the House of Prayer, so that's one that is started. Twiggs Circle, which is the partnership with the Housing Authority, that has already started," said Welcher.

The city is not financially responsible for all the redevelopment projects. The United House of Prayer bought a piece of property to rebuild, a deal the Housing Authority says will benefit the overall goals of the Laney Walker/ Bethlehem project.

"They are already invested in the area so they we'll participate in the Laney Walker/Bethlehem Revitalization Project but we don't need your money. So they've invested, are going to invest five to eight million dollars of their own funding," said Welcher.
