Craigslist fake home renter strikes in Richmond County

Posted: Updated:
AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A woman in Richmond County is out a month's rent and partial deposit after another woman scammed her into a fake rental agreement.

The female victim replied to a Craiglist ad of a home for rent and met the female suspect and an older white male at the house. The suspect had a key and showed the victim around the house where they completed paperwork for the rental. The victim then turned over money for that rent and deposit.

The suspect provided a receipt for the payments.

When the victim returned back to the house later to prepare for the utility transfer, she met the realtor who represented the real owner of the house who told her she did not rent the house from the real owner.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office says the passport and retired military ID card provided by the suspect were not government issued.
