Aiken Tech kicks off campaign for manufacturing, nuclear and energy facility

Aiken, SC - (WFXG) Aiken Technical College kicks off its "Puts Knowledge to Work with Capital" campaign Wednesday afternoon.

The school is raising two million dollars to match a grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to build a new Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing.

The center will support academic programs, initially radiation protection technology, nuclear quality systems, welding and mechatronics, that are crucial to supporting the area's growing manufacturing, nuclear and energy workforce needs.

"When perspective companies come to look at this community, one of the top questions that they ask is 'where will the workforce come from, and where will they have the skills that they need,'" said Dr. Susan Winsor, president of Aiken Tech. "When they come to visit our campus, and see what we have available, that will help clinch that decision to come here."

The facility is estimated at more than $6 million dollars. The old facilities that house the programs now were built in the 1970s, and will be demolished.
