UPDATE: Sheriff's Office says Wilkes County hunter is victim of homicide

WILKES COUNTY, GA (WFXG) -

The Wilkes County Sheriff's Office tells FOX54 that a hunter, who was found dead early Sunday morning in Clarks Hill Wildlife Management Area, is the victim of a homicide.

Jeffery S. Gebhardt's body was located in a marshy area near a small river. He was originally reported missing on Saturday night.

Gebhardt was hunting with another man. The Sheriff's Office is interviewing people that may have information about the homicide.

An autopsy concluded that the death was a homicide.

Original Story:

The Wilkes Co. Sheriff's Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are trying to find answers in the death of a hunter Saturday.

Jeffery S. Gebhardt, 35 of Blairsville, was found dead early Sunday morning in Clarks Hill Wildlife Management Area near Holiday Park.

Wilkes Co. Sheriff Mark Moore tells Fox 54 they received a call Saturday night about a missing hunter.

The caller was hunting with the man when the two became separated, and couldn't find each other.

According to Moore, the Sheriff's office and GBI are currently investigating the death as "suspicious," but are not releasing details.

Gebhardt's body was transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Augusta for an autopsy to be performed Monday.

Initial searches for Gebhardt Saturday night by WCSO, Washington Fire Department, and the Department of Natural Resources were unsuccessful.

The body was located in a marshy area near a small river by an infrared-able Georgia State Patrol helicopter.

Fox 54 will continue to follow this story and update you as we learn more.
