A 50-year-old Sun Lakes man is in custody on suspicion of breaking into 42 homes in Phoenix and the East Valley this summer.

Kilian Hale was arrested after Maricopa County sheriff's investigators, acting on a tip from Chandler police, began to follow the suspect and saw him sell stolen goods to Valley pawn shops, MCSO said.

Deputies estimate the value of stolen items, such as coins, cash, jewelry, stamp collections and other valuables, to be more than $100,000. Many of those goods have been recovered by deputies during the execution of several search warrants.

Besides the Phoenix area, MCSO said Hale is behind burglaries in Sun Lakes and Chandler.

Sheriff's investigators said they believe Hale's method of operation was similar to the rock burglar who escaped detection for 17 years while burglarizing homes in Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek and Fountain Hills. The rock burglar was finally apprehended in May 2011.

Like the rock burglar, Hale cased the targeted home, then used a rock to break into it once he determined no one was home, sheriff's deputies said.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said his deputies are still working the case and believe there may be other suspects still on the loose who worked with Hale.

People with any information are asked to contact the sheriff's office at 602-876-1011. Also any pawn shops that have dealt with Hale in the past are asked to contact the sheriff's office.
