KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Gov. Mitt Romney made an unscheduled stop at Kansas City International Airport Sunday afternoon and got to enjoy some Kansas City barbecue.

Romney was traveling from his home in the Boston area to Los Angeles where he was to give a speech Sunday night.

The GOP presidential candidate was scheduled to appear in Colorado for a campaign rally, but a crash at the Pueblo airport led to cancellation of the event.

That resulted in Romney needing a new mid-country stop to refuel. He chose Kansas City and his plane landed about 4:30 p.m.

There wasn't enough time to put together a motorcade and police escort for him to go to an actual restaurant.

So Air Charter Team put together a catered meal for Romney, his staff and the press corp. Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue was the food of choice. CBS news reporters said pork sandwiches were served in the candidate's portion of the plane.

Presidential candidates have a history of eating Kansas City barbecue. John Kerry told the whole world in 2004 how he enjoyed Gates while former President Bill Clinton has a platter named in his honor at the restaurant. John McCain and Sarah Palin chowed down over Arthur Bryant's in 2008. President Barack Obama has enjoyed Oklahoma Joe's several times.

Romney did step off the plane during the stop in Kansas City. Reporters tweeted pictures of him meeting with a small group of folks who came to the airport to greet him. No word on who was in the delegation.
