Isaac's storm surge lifted three boats out of the water and left them on land surrounding the Pass Christian Harbor. And that has Mayor Chipper McDermott very upset.
PASS CHRISTIAN, MS (WLOX) -
Thursday afternoon, the surf was still crashing over the bulkhead at the Pass Christian Harbor. Water was spilling over the piers and a disturbing scene dominated the landscape.
One boat was in the north parking lot, another on the road to Shaggy's restaurant, and a third up against the power station.
"I'd say in one word, it's a mess," Mayor Chipper McDermott told WLOX News. "We had 215 boats in the harbor, and all but six or seven got out. As you can see, three are in the road and that is a big problem."
A mandatory evacuation order was issued before the storm, which means boat owners must remove their vessels. But it's obvious not everyone did. And Mayor McDermott said he's not happy.
"I'm personally taking it upon myself to talk with these boat owners. I'm personally doing it."
The boats, lifted by Isaac's storm surge, could have caused untold damage and it is a vivid reminder of how cities want boats removed from the harbors.
Meanwhile, on the east side of the Pass Christian Harbor, the city is in the middle of a expansion costing more than $30 million.
"The damage is minimal. My biggest concern is the silt and if it filled in. It was dredged deep. We'll have to check and see what has to be done. The pilings are intact. It's going to delay the project," said McDermott.
The city is attempting to attach a price tag to the damage done to the expansion of the harbor.
