Fort Gordon, GA (WFXG) -
As part of a statewide tour of military-base communities,
U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) will be visiting Fort Gordon on Monday,
August 20 at 10:30 a.m. to discuss the impact that the potential budget
sequestration will have on our national security, our military and on Georgia's
defense infrastructure.
Chambliss, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
will be joined by U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and U.S. Rep. John Barrow. The event
is open to the press.
Leading military officials, including Defense Secretary
Leon Panetta, have warned that sequestration will adversely affect America's
military. He noted that if the military sustains $1 trillion in cuts over the
next decade, "we would have the smallest ground forces since 1940, the
smallest number of ships since 1915, and the smallest Air Force in
history."
Chambliss' tour includes additional stops in Savannah,
Albany, Columbus, Cobb County, Warner Robins, Valdosta and Kings Bay as he
continues to talk about the need for the federal government to control spending
in a responsible way.
