New app reminds parents of kids in hot car

MESA, AZ (CBS5) -

It's disturbing to think that a parent could actually forget a child in the car, especially in Arizona's torturous summer heat, but it's happened before, and it'll unfortunately happen again.

But believe it or not, there's now an app that will remind people not to forget their baby in the backseat.

In 2011, 33 children nationwide died as a result of being left in a hot car. So far in 2012, there have been 15 child fatalities, including one in Mesa.

"We have had one death so far this year in our city limits. But we do get a lot of callouts for what we refer to as lockouts," said Capt. Forrest Smith of the Mesa Fire Department.

You can now download an app for your iPhone or iPad, called Baby Reminder, that literally goes off like an alarm to remind you that there's a child in your back seat. Some feel this is a useful tool, where others feel it's sad that parents need a reminder not to forget their children.

Rescue officials said there's no substitute to responsible parenting, but they don't necessarily have a problem with parents using an app such as this one as a supplemental tool.

"If a parent is finding that it's a useful application, certainly we agree with them using it.  But not just to rely on that one application, use several tools to remind yourself," added Smith.

On average, in desert Arizona's summer heat, the inside of your car will warm 20 degrees in about 20 minutes. And in an hour, the inside temperature of your car can increase by more than 40 degrees.
