ALPINE, MS -

(WMC-TV) – Adam Mayes' landlord and close friend revealed to Action News 5 that the suspected kidnapper and murderer recently saw a doctor and could be in need of a heart transplant.

So far, his heart condition has not affected his ability to stay on the run. Thursday, state wildlife agents searched the woods near his Mississippi home.

"It wouldn't hurt me anymore if it would've been my brother that did this," said Danny Patterson, Mayes' friend and landlord. "We were that close."

Danny Patterson owns Mayes' trailer. He describes him as a renter turned dear friend.

"If somebody would've told me three weeks ago that this would've took place or that he was capable of that, I'd a called 'em a liar," said Patterson.

Mayes is accused of killing Jo Ann Bain and her daughter Adrienne as part of a plot to kidnap 12-year-old Alexandria and 8-year-old Kyliya Bain.

Patterson says Mayes told him he thought they were his children.

"He's always been close to those girls and spent a lot of time with them," Patterson said.

April 27, the Bain's disappeared from their Whiteville, Tennessee home. On April 30, Patterson spoke to Mayes near his trailer.

"I asked him, I said, 'You don't have any idea where they could be?' He told me ‘No', he didn't have any idea. He was very calm about it," Patterson explained.

Mayes was last seen May 1 at this convenience store. Surveillance cameras rolled as he checked out.

Despite an intense manhunt, Mayes has eluded capture ever since ever since.

And the two young girls remain unaccounted for.

"I still consider him my friend. I would love to see him give it up, turn himself in," Patterson said.

And he hopes Mayes will take his advice, "Get those girls safe. Stop all this nonsense. Because you can't run forever."

Patterson says the Mayes' were perfect tenants who always paid the rent on time. He describes Adam Mayes as a fantastic auto mechanic.
