Watch a bear tear apart a campsite

"A lot of people are unaware there are black bears in Arizona," said Hillary Cummens with the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center.

CBS 5 News went to the SWCC for an up close look at what can happen when a black bear gets too close.

"We have three black bears in here. They're all 2 years old," Cummens explained.

They tip the scales at 200 pounds each and have a long way to go, but Cummens said they can already do some major damage.

She loaded a back pack and cooler with some snacks.

"There's some peanut butter and honey sandwiches, some grapes, Nilla wafers, they are attracted to food. They have an excellent sense of smell they can smell over a mile away," Cummens said.

Sure enough, it doesn't take long for our Yogi's and Boo Boo's to sniff it out.

Cummens said black bears are all over the place in northern Arizona.

"They like it where it's a little bit cooler, like the pine trees," she said.

So if you plan on heading north to cool off and camp, make sure you know who else might be hanging around.

Cummens said the best way to keep your food safe is to keep it away from your tent.

She said using bear proof canisters can keep bears out and stop the scent.

Also, bears can be attracted to scented lip gloss or lotion, so leave all that smelly stuff behind when you go camping.

SWCC is hosting a live bear demonstration Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to noon.  For more information click here.
