AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are giving away a grand prize of $1,000,000 to fight hunger to the city that can rally the most votes on Facebook.  Golden Harvest Food Bank is leading the charge to bring that prize to Augusta, which has been selected as one of 200 metropolitan areas in the United States that are eligible to win.  The money will support hunger relief efforts through the food bank and our partner food pantries and direct service programs.  The contest started April 9th and fans can vote once every day until April 30th, when the winner will be declared.  Just go to apps.facebook.com/walmartfighthunger and vote for Augusta, GA!

In May 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation committed $2 billion to fight domestic hunger through 2015. Walmart is committed to using its scale and reach to help solve the hunger challenge facing America. As part of their initial commitment, Walmart committed to engage its customers, associates and other corporations in the fight against hunger. As part of this campaign, they are also asking you to vote for the communities you want to support from a list of 200 metropolitan statistical areas. The winner will receive $1 million to fight hunger locally, and the next 20 runners-up will each win $50,000.

Golden Harvest Food Bank is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization that provides quality food and other grocery products to those in need.  We do this with local community support through direct service programs, food pantries, and community education about hunger.  The Food Bank was founded in Augusta, Georgia, in 1982, and now operates from three distribution centers – Augusta, GA and Aiken and Liberty, SC.  Golden Harvest is a locally-supported 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides grocery products to the hungry through direct service programs and a network of more than 400 food pantries and soup kitchens.  Golden Harvest distributed more than 14.2 million pounds of grocery products to those in need in fiscal year 2011.
