They serve those who serve our country, and now they're being called the best.

Fort Gordon's Dining Facility #2 was given the 44th Annual Phillip A. Connelly Award for best food service, being named the U.S. Army's best "Civilian Garrison" facility.

Ft. Gordon Commanding General Major General Alan Lynn honored the facility staff for their accomplishment Tuesday morning.

"You are the best in the Army," Lynn told the group.

MG Lynn says the dining facility has done a terrific job boosting troop morale by providing a "taste of home."

"For them to have the opportunity to get that home-style cooking, that feeling of home is critically important," Lynn says. "It keeps their morale high so they can study hard and become the best soldiers the Army has ever seen."

Ft. Gordon Food Program Manager Carlos Keith says he's proud of the hard work the staff has done, and glad it has paid off.

"These food service workers, they're a part of the whole mission here at Ft. Gordon in improving the morale of soldiers," Keith says. "When the soldiers finish work or before they go to work, this is the place they come to eat, and so we want to make sure they get a good, healthy, nutritious, hot meal."

The Connelly Award was established in 1968 by the Department of the Army and the Food Service Executives Association to improve food service operations and recognize the best dining facilities in the country.

The award is based on food preparation, taste, nutrition, service, and sanitation.
