Dash cam video of ADPS officer shooting will not be released

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - The recorded dash cam video of the night of Master Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson's death will not be released to the media until after trial.

Judge Jack Early took only a few minutes to make the decision in court on Thursday. Several media outlets requested the video through the Freedom of Information Act, which allows for the release of government documents.

"As victims in this case we do respect the judge's decision to keep this video tape," says Lieutenant David Turno, who attended the hearing today.

Absent for the second time was Stephon Carter, the 19-year-old charged with shooting Richardson in December. Carter's lawyer, Carl Grant, who represented the man in his absence, agreed with the ruling.

"A defendant has a right to a fair trial," says Grant, "and a jury that's not prejudice if you will with regards to their ability to be fair."

The Richardson family and most of the Aiken Community also agreed with the judge's decision.
