Scam Alert: Arizona's most common scam

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The most common scam in Arizona in 2011 was the so-called "debt collection" scam, according to the Federal Trade Commission's Consumer Sentinel Report.

In the debt collection scam, a victim is typically contacted by a con artist over the phone, and told they owe an old debt. Consumer protection agencies have taken reports from victims who say the callers use aggressive tactics, even threatening to have the victims arrested.

According to the FTC's Sentinel Report, Arizona victims see an average loss of $2,100, are in their 50s, and send the money to the scammers through a wire transfer or using a credit card.
