It's been cold here in the CSRA, but some of our troops serving overseas are not only dealing with cold conditions, but they are doing so in a war zone.
FOX54 told you about "Operation Hand-Warmer" back in December. And today, one young boy is helping to keep our heroes overseas warm.
11-year-old Bailey Lewis heard about "Operation Hand-Warmer", a campaign set up by local businessmen, to collect hand-warmers for our front-line troops in Afghanistan.
Bailey decided he wanted to donate every penny in his savings account, about $100, to help our men and women in uniform in Afghanistan.
Today he was featured on KICKS 99 - as part of their campaign to collect for the cause.
"I wanted to help them because, I try to imagine myself in their place with 50 bullets flying over my head and I couldn't even pull the trigger," says Bailey Lewis.
Mike Tyler with KICKS 99 adds, "this was a tremendous success and it's all going to our troops in Afghanistan".
All of the donations collected by KICKS99 were loaded into their van this morning and escorted by Columbia County Sheriff's deputies to the Century 21 Larry Miller Realty office building.
NEWS RELEASE ON OPERATION HAND-WARMER:
Augusta, GA. – February 17, 2012 --- When KICKS 99 morning drive announcers Mike
Tyler and Steve Smith heard about "Operation Hand-Warmer", they immediately put
together an amazingly successful, all-out station promotion, almost constantly urging
listeners to donate hand-warmers, beef jerky and cash to help front-line U.S. troops in
bitterly cold Afghanistan. "We know that our listeners are very patriotic, so we felt
good about ‘Operation Hand-Warmer" from the very beginning," explains Steve Smith,
who also serves as the chief meteorologist for all of KICKS 99's Beastly Broadcast
Group sister stations in the Augusta market. Mike Tyler adds: "Our KICKS KREW got
behind this intense effort 100%, and we were able to hold donation events every
morning this week at area Starbucks locations, as well as at Jiffy Lube in Aiken
tomorrow (Saturday) morning. The outpouring of love and support for our men and
women fighting the war in Afghanistan has been heart-warming, to say the least."
Celebration Planned for Tuesday Morning
Tyler reports that all of the donations collected by KICKS 99 through Monday,
February 20th, will be loaded into their KICKS KREW van at about 9:00 Tuesday
morning (February 21st) during the live KICKS KREW broadcast featuring "Operation
Hand-Warmer" founder Burt Sappenfield and Larry Miller. Then the KICKS KREW
van and other vehicles from CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty will be escorted by
Columbia County Sheriff's Deputies to the CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty
headquarters office building at 235 North Belair Road in Evans.
Celebrating a Stunning Success
"Even though this year's ‘Operation Hand-Warmer' is far from over---it officially
closes on March 14th---we want to celebrate the truly admirable efforts of our friends
at KICKS 99," reports CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty owner/broker Larry
Miller. "Mike, Steve, Operations Manager Tee Gentry, ‘WB' (Bryan Axelson), VPGM
Kent Dunn, and the whole Beasley Broadcast Group staff have poured their
time, their passion, their money and their hearts into this effort to make sure our troops
in Afghanistan have warm hands, warm feet and warm bellies."
When the KICKS 99 entourage arrives at 235 North Belair Road, they will be met
by CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty realtors and staffers, CSRA HOME
CONNECTIONS Preferred Providers, and an as yet unconfirmed "surprise". "Right
now, we're projecting that we will deliver thousands of packs of hand-warmers and
beef jerky, as well as $5,000 or more in cash donations," says Mike Tyler.
Because hand-warmers are growing scarce in area stores, project founder Burt
Sappenfield urges those willing to help to purchase beef jerky and Chef Boy-Ar-Dee
mini-meals in a can with pop-tops. "And we really need cash donations to go
towards the special boxes and postage required to make sure these supplies get to our
men and women in Afghanistan."
Mr. Miller adds that CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty realtors and staffers, as well as
CSRA HOME CONNECTIONS Preferred Provider volunteers, will have an
"Operation Hand-Warmer Packing Party" from 9:00 A.M. until the project is
completed at the Columbia County office.
11-year-old Patriot Bailey Lewis Empties his Bank Account for Our Troops
Bailey Lewis, a 6th-grader at Hephzibah Middle School, heard about "Operation
Hand-Warmer" and told his great-grandparents, Larry and Priscilla Nunnally, that
he wanted to donate every penny in his savings account (about $100) to help our men
and women in uniform in Afghanistan. Mrs. Nunnally, who says she and her husband
have raised Bailey since they brought him home from the hospital when he was born,
is justifiably proud of her great-grandson. "We've tried to raise him right, and he has
always had the heart of a patriot."
Larry and Priscilla Nunnally plan to take Bailey Lewis to the KICKS 99 studios at 7:45
Tuesday morning (February 21st) so he can personally hand his donation to Mike
Tyler and Steve Smith on the air sometime during the 8:00 hour.
The "Operation Hand-Warmer" Background Story
Amid reports of an unusually bitter Afghanistan winter---with 20 civilian deaths from
the cold already reported, and more mountain avalanches predicted---CEO Larry
Miller announced recently that the CSRA HOME CONNECTIONS Local
Alliance Co-op Marketing Program's "Operation Hand-Warmer" is fast
becoming a patriotic phenomenon. "Burt Sappenfield, a hard-working CSRA
HOME CONNECTIONS Preferred Provider and Ambassador, laid the groundwork
for this drive to collect hand-warmers for our front-line troops in Afghanistan,"
explains Mr. Miller. (Mr. Sappenfield is the owner of Majestic Floor Care in
Augusta and Savannah.) "Operation Hand-Warmer" is designed to supplement
standard military issue clothing and supplies, specifically for those who have to do
hand-related tasks requiring dexterity in combat zones. A special Web site
(www.OperationHandwarmer.com) outlines the details and "how to" information
that will make it easy for anyone to help warm the hands--and hearts---of our men
and women in uniform fighting the war in Afghanistan.
Larry Miller Challenges other Century 21® Offices and Connections® Groups
CSRA HOME CONNECTIONS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of owner-broker Larry
Miller's CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty. Mr. Miller is challenging all Century
21® brokers, realtors, and Century 21 Connections® organizations nationwide to help
make sure our troops have warm hands for wartime duty in Afghanistan. "Interested
brokers and realtors can simply visit the special ‘Operation Hand-Warmer' page on our
Web site, and it will be easy for everyone to participate," reports Larry Miller, himself
a former United States Army Military Police Captain who was stationed at nearby Fort
Gordon. "These men and women are putting everything on the line for our country, so I
think the least we can do is show them we care in a tangible, meaningful way."
CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty agents and staff members are also heavily
committed to the success of this effort. Marketing Director Lindsey Folley reports that
drop-off boxes are set up at all three CENTURY 21 Larry Miller Realty offices.
Mr. Sappenfield reminds us of the urgency inherent in Operation Hand-Warmer:
"Our troops are moving deeper into the dead of winter in a harsh foreign environment
every day, so we need to make this happen for them as quickly as possible."

products and services throughout the year." Lindsey Folley adds: "Plus, in an
effort to make sure we're promoting the very best businesses available, all

Committee's review process, and agree to regular monitoring and customer service
standards." Interested companies or individuals may contact Director of
