SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
WTOC obtained video that a mother says proves her son was assaulted by a bus driver with the Savannah-Chatham County School System.
Police say Hubert Middle School student Tremell Grady was maced by the driver while he was on his way home from school Thursday.
First Student, the company contracted with the district to provide bus services, fired the driver, but a grand jury decided not to charge the bus driver on Wednesday.
"If I hit a 14 year old, I would have charges against me. I don't understand why she isn't facing charges," said the boy's mother Carla Jackson.
In the video, the driver can be heard cursing at Tremell and then a physical altercation begins.
"I never hit her. She hit me. Then she hit me agan and maced me," the boy said.
In the cell phone video recording, Tremell is rubbing his eyes and having trouble breathing from the mace.
He then chases the bus and punches one of the windows.
The Savannah-Chatham County School Board released the following statement:
"Throughout the process of the investigation the district cooperated fully with the Chatham County DA's Office in the investigation of this incident and today at approximately 11:00 a.m. a Special Presentation was made before Chatham County Grand Jury in the case of former school bus driver, Ms. Tanika Harrison, to consider the following charges: Cruelty To a Child First Degree and Reckless Conduct.
At approximately 2 p.m., after deliberation, the Grand Jury rendered a "No Bill" (no indictment) on all charges. The employee of First Student, an independent company that the district contracts to provide transportation services for parents in Savannah-Chatham County, was terminated as a result of her action."
