Murder victim's family can't afford funeral

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Carter family is trying to come to grips with the loss of Doniell Hicks.

Rhiana Surrey, Hick's cousin said, "It's been tough because I really can't, you know, it hasn't registered yet that it's real, it's been hard," Surrey continued saying, "He has a Bible, it's at my house and when I see that Bible I think of him."

"He was a father he was a friend and he was a brother to a lot of us, he will be well missed," said Daniel Boynton, a friend of Hicks.

Hicks, a 24-year-old father died after he was shot in the chest last week.

The man investigators say is responsible, Christopher Gary Smith, is still on the run.

"He's kind of fallen off the grid away from normal areas that he would be, so we're asking for anybody with information to contact us to help us locate him," said Richmond County Sergeant, William Leisey.

And now, the family gets an even tougher blow, they're struggling to pay for the funeral because Hick's mother is out of work.

"I got a bad heart and I get a monthly income; I no longer work," said Louise Carter, Hick's mother.

"She has a heart condition and she was taken off her job because of her illness," said Boynton.

And to help raise funeral funds, they're asking the community to help them cover the costs.

"With the help of the public I'm sure things will be taken care of, we just wanted to go about it the right way and do it according to the law," said Boynton.

And while they're searching for funeral funds, investigators are still searching for answers to the shooting.
"We can't release anything about motive just because we will want to get Christopher's side of the story and find out from him before we put out there what we believe the issue might be," said Leisey.

Words that give little solace to a family that says they've lost an important part of their lives.

"He stayed with me in the house a lot, I watched him grow up, I raised him. Whatever he did, he did for the good," said Surrey.

The funeral for Hicks will be held at Moses Baptist Church Friday at 2 pm.

If you do decide to help cover funeral costs, you can go to a Wells Fargo Bank and donate to: Louise Carter in reference to Doniell Hicks.
