Jan Smith: News Director

I started my career in broadcast news while I was going to college at the University of Maine in Orono. I was an intern at the NBC affiliate in Bangor, Maine (WLBZ-TV) my last two years of college. After graduation, the station hired me as a production assistant. In the next 11 or so years I worked my way up to morning cut-in, fill-in anchor and city hall reporter.

In 1993 I got a craving for Mexican food and warmer weather so I took a position as a general assignment reporter in El Paso, TX at the NBC affiliate (KTSM-TV). In 1994, the station promoted me to morning anchor/producer, then a couple of years later, promoted me again to 5pm anchor. Throughout my time in Texas I remained KTSM's city hall reporter.

While I was in Texas I met my future husband, Michael Finnegan. We married in 1994, had our son Jack in 1998. A few months after Jack's birth, we moved back to Maine where I went back to where my television career began: WLBZ-TV in Bangor. I became the station's 5 & 6pm anchor. I had the honor of helping to promote a wonderful & important breast cancer awareness program called BUDDY-2-BUDDY, as well as many other worthwhile programs.

In September 2001, I had the opportunity to expand my horizons into the realm of management, and became the news director for the ABC & FOX affiliates across town in Bangor (WVII-TV & WFVX-TV) & 6pm anchor for the ABC affiliate (WVII-TV). In the three years there, we took some bold steps outside the box when it came to news coverage and special projects: from GOOD NEWS FRIDAYS (no bad news on ABC-7 @6), to the annual STUFF THE BUS school supplies collection program.

In late August of 2004, the South called again, this time to Savannah and the powerhouse CBS affiliate WTOC-TV.  Jump forward one more time, and I now have the pleasure of being the News Director for WFXG-TV, Fox54 in Augusta, Georgia.

I am thankful for the opportunity to work with such a dynamic and dedicated group of people. Its no wonder WFXG is your 10p News Leader, and I'm honored to now call it home.
