CONWAY, SC (WMBF) The Conway Police Department has arrested a 29-year-old Myrtle Beach man in connection to three home invasions during the year after DNA evidence linked him to the scenes.

Catina Hipp, spokeswoman for the Conway Police Department, said officers responded to a home along Technology Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. on Aug. 24 in reference to a home invasion with an unknown man in a woman's bedroom.

According to the complainant, she could hear her roommate screaming and then saw the man leave her roommate's bedroom before fleeing the home.

Officers with Conway Police and Coastal Carolina University searched the area but were unable to locate anyone fitting the suspect's description.

Hipp said the victim told officers the man entered her bedroom while she was asleep. When she woke up, she saw the man hovering over her and a struggle ensued between the two. After the victim was reportedly shoved into a nightstand, the suspect fled the area in an unknown direction, Hipp said.

Upon further investigation, officers were able to identify the suspect as Matthew Elkins, 29, of Myrtle Beach. Officers with the CCU Department of Public Safety arrested Elkins at his home without incident Thursday, according to Hipp.

In June, a woman woke up to find an unknown white male standing over her bed with what she reported was a knife. She told police she was unable to identify the suspect, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division generated a sketch using her description of the man.

On March 7, officers responded to a home along Fairway Lane after a female victim reported she woke up to a man touching her. He fled before she could get a good look at him, Hipp said.

Tuesday, Hipp said a DNA sample taken from Elkins after his arrest on Aug. 25 matched DNA taken from the other scenes.

Elkins was charged with burglary in the first degree and assault with the intent to commit criminal sexual conduct in the first degree in connection to the assault on Aug. 24.

Hipp said Elkins has now be charged with criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, two counts of burglary, kidnapping and assault with the intent to commit criminal sexual conduct in connection to the March and June incidents.

He remains incarcerated at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
