UPDATE: Former Wrens police officer and deadly Telfair St. shooting suspect appears in court Friday

UPDATE: Arrest made after fatal shooting in Augusta

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - 24-year-old Justin Darius Evans-McKinney of Hephzibah is scheduled to appear in court Friday, Mar. 15 at 9 a.m. McKinney is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

ORIGINAL STORY: An investigation is underway after a shooting in Augusta left a man dead on Telfair St. FOX 54 has learned that the suspect is a former police officer.

At around 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 27, Richmond County deputies were called out to River Glen Apartment on East Telfair St. for a reported shooting. When they arrived, deputies found 31-year-old Jarvis Lee Jones suffering at lest 1 gunshot wound. He later died from his injuries. His body was taken to the GBI Lab on Thursday for autopsy.

Investigators have located and arrested the man they believe killed Jones: 24-year-old Justin Darius Evans-McKinney of Hephzibah. McKinney is charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

FOX 54 has learned that Evans-McKinney was a former police officer. A spokesperson for the city of Wrens said he was hired as a Wrens Police Department road patrol officer in March 2017. He worked for one week and never assigned another shift. He was terminated from the department in June of the same year.
