First baby born in 2019 in Augusta has special meaning behind name

While many people were out celebrating the news year, one family brought in 2019 with one more addition to their family. He was supposed to make his grand entrance on February 4th.

“I gotta keep him in. It’s not time for him to come out yet,” says Donnie & Amber Royal.

But Cal Lovett Royal had other plans.

“That’s when I was like okay, it’s game time,” says Donnie.

Cal is the first baby to be born in Augusta on New Year's Day at 12:30 at University Hospital.

Being 5 weeks premature, he was put in the NICU. His parents say he’s made progress over the past 12 hours now breathing on his own.

“To be early he was a really good weight. He was 6 pounds, 4 ounces and 19 inches long,” said the Royals.

But looking at this future NFL first round pick, Cal’s parents Donnie and Amber say, they know he’s special in more ways than one. Starting with his name.

“I lost my brother back in 2010 and his initials were C-A-L,” says Amber.

Amber, calls her twin brother her best-friend saying it was a no brainer. “Boys names are hard to come up with and we couldn’t have thought of anything better than to name him after my brother, CAL,” she says.

And while Cal is improving by the hour, Donnie knew he would pull through ultimately. Why? Well you can’t play SEC Football at Georgia and not be a fighter.

“We got him enrolled in Spring Football Camp. He’s already one of the youngest there I think,” says Donnie.

The Royals said they had a baby shower planned for Cal on Sunday which is still on. They’re hoping that they can take baby Cal home before so he can make his introduction to the entire family.
