Help kids have a merry Christmas by donating to Toys for Tots in Augusta

Help kids have a merry Christmas by donating to Toys for Tots in Augusta

(WFXG) - Toys for Tots in Augusta is kicking off its annual Christmas campaign the goal collecting 200,000 toys and hoping to help 50,000 children this year.

The new coordinator is working to rebuild the organization from the ground up after several set backs last year. Dropping a toy into one of these boxes can put a smile on faces of kids in the CSRA.

“It’s important for them to have their hope and joy and excitement, I think, at Christmastime," said Tammy Hoyt, office manager at Crawford Orthodontics.

Hoyt is a mother and grandmother - she believes the holidays help people believe in their dreams.

“If I could not provide for them for Christmas, that would sadden me deeply," Hoyt said.

Her heart and help goes out to Toys for Tots. The organization is trying to reach as many kids as they can. They need toys for children, especially ages eight and up.

It’s an uphill battle. Coordinator Anne Woods said they need toys and volunteers.

Woods has volunteered with the group for 32 years and is now the new coordinator. She’s working to rebuild a reputation tarnished by the arrest of the old coordinator, Grace Anderson, and after last year’s warehouse break-in where thousands of dollars worth of toys and office equipment was stolen.

FOX 54′s Jasmine Anderson asked what she’s doing to turn the organization around.

Woods answered, “The only thing I’m doing is reaching out to everyone, asking everyone for their help and support and most people are being very gracious and doing it and some are not - but some are.”

That’s why people like Kelvin Hughes is welcoming donation boxes for the second year, hoping to make a difference in his community.

“It’s good to know that some one loves you. It helps change minds and you don’t forget that love," said Kelvin Hughes, Owner of A Cut and A Style on Riverwatch Parkway.

If you’re in need of toys for your children, you have until November 30th to register. The organization is asking you to give new and unwrapped toys by December 15TH - you can also make a monetary donation.
